About Cycling Heals Vets Connect (CHVC)

Cycling Heals Vets Connect (CHVC) is a dedicated initiative that began in January 2019. This monthly event occurs on the second Tuesday of each month at the scenic Salem Lake. In collaboration with Operation North State and the City of Winston-Salem Recreation & Parks, CHVC aims to provide veterans with a unique and therapeutic recreational experience.

Our Mission

CHVC’s mission is to offer an organized opportunity for Recreational Therapy, addressing the significant need for such activities among our veterans. We understand the power of community, physical activity, and the outdoors in promoting overall well-being and healing.

What We Offer

At each event, the National Cycling Center (NCC) ensures that every participant has access to all necessary equipment and support. We provide:

  • Bikes and Helmets: High-quality bikes and helmets to ensure safety and comfort.
  • Bike Service: On-site bike maintenance to keep everything running smoothly.
  • Ride Companions: Experienced riders to accompany and support participants.

These events are not just about cycling; they are filled with fun, fellowship, and food, making them a highlight for many veterans.

Participation and Impact

Over the years our attendance has remained relatively consistent.  With the largest event attracting 80+ people we average around 36 per month.  While this is a great opportunity to ride a bike it is certainly not required.  Many participants sit and enjoy coffee, snacks and conversation while others take a scenic wall along the lake.  With a variety of things to do at Salem lake the events are always a great time to relax. Some veterans travel from up to two hours away to join us, demonstrating the program's value and impact.

Unique and Valuable

The NCC partners with local bike-centric organizations to provide refurbished bicycles to youth at no cost.
